Paediatric Dentistry

What is Paediatric Dentistry?

British Society Paediatric Dentistry Logo
Paediatric Dentistry is the dental specialty that provides comprehensive oral health care for children from birth through to adolescence. Paediatric Dentistry is unlike any other dental specialty in that it covers all aspects of oral health care for children such as prevention, restorative care (for example fillings), minor oral surgical procedures, and interceptive orthodontics.

At Lisburn Road Dental Practice, our Paediatric Dentist is dedicated to providing dental care for children and adolescents exclusively. She provides dental care for children with both routine and complex dental needs. She also caters for children for whom dentistry is more complicated because of special medical, intellectual, physical, sensory or emotional requirements.

Treatment for children is usually carried out with or without local anaesthetic using a range of behaviour management techniques.

Sometimes it is necessary for younger children, those with medical or behavioural problems or children with extensive/complicated dental needs, to provide treatment using inhalation sedation or general anaesthesia.

Our general anaesthetic treatment is undertaken at Kingsbridge Private Hospital or the Ulster Independent Clinic. The  general anaesthetic is given by a Consultant Anaesthetist in an operating theatre, to allow the provision of  high quality care in a safe environment.

Special Care Needs

Children with chronic medical conditions sometimes have more anxiety about visits to the dentist than children who have not been in hospital before. Some physical disabilities can affect manual dexterity and a child’s ability to maintain good oral health, putting them at higher risk of decay. Preventive care in these children is of huge importance. Appropriate dental treatment needs to be delivered in a way that meets all the special requirements of your child. Good oral health is an important part of total health. When helping children with special care needs, we often work with paediatricians, other physicians and other dental specialists.

The practice puts strong emphasis on preventive care, early detection and treatment of dental diseases and keeping up to date on the latest advances in dentistry for children. We provide high quality dental care in a safe and caring manner. We have the expertise and a full range of modern facilities to ensure that children experience dental care in a way they find acceptable. Our goal is to help children look after their teeth, develop healthy smiles and promote the establishment of trust and confidence in your child that will last a lifetime.
